Tracy Chapman
'Fast Car'

You got a fast car
I want a ticket to anywhere
Maybe we make a deal
Maybe together we can get somewhere
Anyplace is better
Starting from zero got nothing to lose
Maybe we'll make something
me myself I got nothing to prove
You got a fast car
And I got a plan to get us out of here
I been working at the convenience store
Managed to save just a little bit of money
We won't have to drive too far
Just 'cross the border and into the city
You and I can both get jobs
Finally see what it means to be living
You see my old man's got a problem
He live with the bottle that's the way it is
He says his body's too old for working
I say his body's too young to look like his
My mama went off and left him
She wanted more from life than he could give
I said somebody's got to take care of him
So I quit school , that's what I did
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so we can fly away
We gotta make a decision
We leave tonight or live and die this way
I remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone,
be someone,
be someone ...
You got a fast car
And we go cruising to entertain ourselves
You still ain't got a job
And I work in a market as a checkout girl
I know things will get better
You'll find work and I'll get promoted
We'll move out of the shelter
Buy a big house and live in the suburbs
I remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone,
be someone,
be someone ...
You got a fast car
And I got a job that pays all our bills
You stay out drinking late at the bar
See more of your friends than you do of your kids
I'd always hoped for better
Thought maybe together you and me would find it
I got no plans I ain't going nowhere
So take your fast car and keep on driving
I remember we were driving driving in your car
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk
City lights lay out before us
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder
And I had a feeling that I belonged
I had a feeling I could be someone,
be someone,
be someone ...
You got a fast car
Is it fast enough so you can fly away
You gotta make a decision
You leave tonight or live and die this way

She's got an angel's face ain't she?...and the most wonderful eyes as well, reaflecting her inner and outer beauty. To me this women is a perfection and example how wonderful human being can be.
I just can't help but love this song. I absolutely adore Tracy's style of writing, always so deep, true and emotional. One could say most of her songs are sad but even though she touches hard topics there is always message of hope contained in whatever she writes.
This song is about a girl who goes through the hard experience of living with father who is an alcoholic. Her mother went away and left her to cope with this situation on her own.Her life turns into a hell and all that she got is her dream that somwhere out there, there is a better life waiting for her. Finally she decides to leave her father and try a new life with her boyfriend.
He apparently is not anyone special, but he's got a fast car and maybe both of them have a reason to escape , get in the car that would take them away from their past, from themselves..
It sounds like she really does not expect much from life,in fact she just wants to be anywhere but whre she is now.Maybe it is not a right car and not a right person but she feels like she's got nothing to lose.
What really matters is that the car is fast enough so they can fly away. And for that little while they are on the road she believes that it leads them towards something better and that she finally could be someone.
However they don't find their promised land. The new life which was ment to be different from that one she knew appears to be the same. Now she's facing the same situation that her mum once did .But unlike her mother kids are the most important for her .She was hoping for a better but all she received was a life like her mother had, anyway despite her broken dreams she has really won her life, she has always wanted to be someone ,and so she has done it...ability to sacrifice describes how great we are,
